AI Strategy Workbench
Turn trading ideas into strategy code by chatting, then save versions and backtest them.
How the workbench works
The workbench follows one principle: You set direction, AI executes. Code the AI writes is saved only after you confirm it.
A full research cycle
- Describe your idea: state your strategy in one sentence.
- The AI writes code: if your request is unclear, the AI asks you questions first.
- Save a version: lock in the code the AI wrote.
- Backtest: test this version on historical market data.
- Review results and keep improving: ask the AI for changes, then save a new version and backtest again.
Drafts and versions
| Draft | Version | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The code the AI has written so far | A snapshot saved from the draft, numbered v1, v2, v3… |
| Does it change | Written when you say "save" in the chat; each save replaces the last | Fixed when you click Save as a version; cannot be changed |
| What you can do with it | The AI can do trial runs in the chat | Submit backtests in the backtest panel, bind it to a contest entry, apply to list |
Why drafts and versions are separate
Backtests, contest entries and listings need a fixed copy of the code so the results match it. However the draft changes later, saved versions and their backtest results stay the same.
Have the AI write a strategy
To create a strategy, you need points left in your account and must be under your plan's strategy limit. See Plans and points.
Describe your idea
Open AI Strategy Workbench in the left navigation, describe your strategy in the input box, and send it. The workbench creates the strategy and passes your idea to the AI. Generating code can take a few minutes. When it is done, you can open the code directly from the chat.
The AI writes more accurately when you state these clearly:
- Instrument and timeframe: "BTC/USDT perpetual, 1-hour candles"
- Entry and exit conditions: "Go long when RSI is below 30 and price is above the 20-period moving average"
- Risk controls: "2% stop loss per trade, hold for at most 3 days"
To make changes later, say what to change, for example "Change the stop loss to 1.5x ATR and keep everything else the same".
The AI confirms details with multiple-choice questions. If you are unsure, click Use all recommended.
View code and configuration
The Code and Configuration views are read-only. To change the strategy, tell the AI in the chat.
The AI may also do a trial run of the draft in the chat. The results appear in Past backtests. Trial runs are for research only and cannot be used for contests or listing.
Common messages
| Message | Meaning and what to do |
|---|---|
| The AI is still working on this message | The reply will appear in the chat shortly. Do not send it again. |
| The reply did not pass the compliance check | The content was not saved. Rephrase and send again. |
Save a version
Saving takes two steps: first the code is written to the draft, then the draft is saved as a version.
Steps
- Say "save" to the AI in the chat. The AI writes the code to the draft, and a Save as a version card appears in the chat.
- Click Save Version on the card (or Save Version at the top of the page), optionally add a version note, then click Save. The page shows Saved as vN.
View all saved versions in Version History at the top of the page.
Run a backtest
A backtest simulates your strategy's trades on historical market data to show how a version would have performed. Backtests run in the background, so you can close the page after submitting and come back later for the results. Each backtest you submit costs points.
Submit a backtest
- Switch to the Backtest view.
- Under Version, choose the version to backtest. The latest version is selected by default. If you have no version yet, click Save Version and Backtest to save and submit in one step.
- (Optional) Change Window Start and Window End. The default window is the 90 days ending two days ago.
- Click Submit backtest.
A backtest usually takes from a few minutes to tens of minutes. To cancel, click Cancel backtest and confirm. Progress already made is not kept. Points spent on a backtest are not refunded if it is cancelled or fails.
When a backtest fails
The page explains why the backtest failed and offers one button based on the cause:
| Cause | Button |
|---|---|
| Data for the selected window is incomplete | Adjust dates, then submit with a different window |
| The strategy code raised an error while running | Ask AI to fix |
| A temporary platform error | Retry submits again with the same version and window, and costs points again |
| Unknown cause | Ask AI to look |
When you click Ask AI to fix or Ask AI to look, the error message is filled into the chat box but not sent. You can add details before you send it.
Past backtests
Past backtests lists finished backtests, including trial runs the AI did in the chat. Click a row to see the results of that run.
Read backtest results
After a backtest succeeds, the page shows the equity curve, metrics and fills. Click View full report to open the full report generated by the backtest engine.
Equity curve
The equity curve is overlaid with a Buy and hold curve for the same period for comparison. If the strategy curve stays below the buy-and-hold curve over time, the strategy did not beat simply holding the instrument.
Metrics that need explaining
| Metric | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Annualized Return | The return over the window converted to a one-year rate. Short windows inflate this number, so it is of limited use. |
| Max Drawdown | The largest drop in equity from a peak to a later low. |
| Sharpe Ratio | Excess return per unit of volatility. |
| Sortino Ratio | A Sharpe ratio that counts only downside volatility as risk. |
| Calmar Ratio | Annualized return ÷ max drawdown. |
| Buy & Hold Return | The return from simply holding the instrument over the same period, for comparison. |
| Profit factor | Average profit ÷ average loss. |
| Monthly Win Rate | The share of months that were profitable. |
Fills
When there are many fills, the page shows only the first 200. If the strategy platform does not return the detail, the page shows Fills unavailable.
Results to watch for
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| This backtest produced no trades | The strategy's trigger conditions were never met in the selected window, so every metric is 0. Check whether the entry conditions are too strict, or try a different window. |
| Unusual result: account equity went below 0 | This is usually a position-sizing error, and the numbers should not be trusted. Click Ask AI to fix. |
| The selected window has data gaps | Some periods have no market data, so the result is based on incomplete data. |
Manage My Strategies
Strategies you build in the workbench and the Self-hosted strategies you connect are all in My Strategies. You can filter them by tabs such as Draft, In contest and Listed. Click a row to open that strategy.
Handle listing and funding
The end of each row shows the actions currently available for that strategy:
| Action | When it appears |
|---|---|
| Apply to list | You have not applied to list yet. If the strategy does not meet the requirements yet, clicking it tells you what is missing. |
| Withdraw application | The listing application is under review. |
| Answer the request | The reviewer has asked for more material. |
| Revise & resubmit | The listing application was rejected. For self-hosted strategies, it shows as Revise and resubmit. |
| Apply for group funding | The strategy is listed. See Apply for funding. |
